The Republican Party is always saying that they don’t have a problem with racism. This claim comes despite this administration’s racist crackdown on voting rights, as well as the racist elf who likes to call himself America’s Attorney General, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, is actually using the Department of Justice to look into alleged racism against white people. Those things pale in comparison to what is happening in their Illinois Congressional race, though. You see, the GOP is running an actual, true-to-life Nazi for the United States Congress.
Meet Arthur Jones, a self-identified Nazi and the GOP candidate for Congress for the Third District of Illinois. He appeared on CNN’s New Day, and spoke with host Alisyn Camerota. He said of his bigoted beliefs:
“Yes, I deny the Holocaust. It is an extortion racket, pure and simple. And if you did any investigation, and if you did any honest investigation of the Holocaust you’d realize that it is nothing but an international extortion racquet by the Jews.”
Unsurprisingly, one of the things that appears on Jones’s resume is once leading the American Nazi Party. Of course , Jones insists that he isn’t really a Nazi anymore, just an America First type, a la Donald Trump:
“For the past 15-20 years I have not had anything to do with any National Socialist organization on a formal basis. I don’t call myself a Nazi. I call myself and American patriot and statesman. The only organization that I belong to is my own organization and that is the America First committee.”
Luckily, Alisyn Camerota is one of the better television news hosts, and she shot back at Jones:
“You’ve been party of anti-Semitic groups since the 1970s, you go to neo-Nazi rallies, we have pictures of you there, you were part of the White People’s party, you dress in Nazi garb and you celebrate Hitler’s birthday — you’re a Nazi.”
Of course Jones is a Nazi, but that isn’t the worst part, believe it or not. The worst part is that national GOP leaders have been silent on his candidacy, and this is part of a much larger and more disturbing pattern. Donald Trump won the support of white supremacists across the land in the 2016 election, and they continue to rally in his name. While the Illinois Republican Party and the national Republican Party have released the obligatory statements disavowing Arthur Jones, no leaders have gone before a camera to say a word. Further, there have been no procedural moves on the parts of the Illinois Republican Party or on the Republican National Committee to disqualify Jones. Their silence speaks volumes.
The GOP does and says nothing, unless they are forced to, such as in the situation that unfolded last summer in Charlottesville, Virginia, where neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and other assorted white nationalists and white supremacists held a violent rally that resulted in the death of a woman and in the injuries of countless others.
People keep wanting to not believe that one of America’s two major parties has been taken over by white supremacists. The thing is, this is who the Republican Party has been for the last five decades, ever since Richard Nixon deployed the racist Southern Strategy so successfully. It’s just out in the open now.
