Since 1790, the President of the United States has given their annual State of the Union address. It wasn’t always called this, not until 1934, but there has always been some form of an annual address to Congress since our first President. It is an important tradition that has allowed the president to stand firm on his beliefs, and call Congress to action. It has allowed the American people to see firsthand the progress we have made as a nation, and what is to come.
Not surprisingly, Republican animosity towards President Obama has reached an all time high. This time, they want to deny President Obama the chance to speak on the House floor for his annual State of the Union address in January.
“Yes, there’s a risk to overreacting, but there’s a risk to underreacting as well,” Rich Lowry, the editor of National Review, said. “And I fear that’s the way the congressional leadership is leaning. If I were John Boehner, I’d say to the president: ‘Send us your State of the Union in writing. You’re not welcome in our chamber.’”
Their irrational hatred and disrespect towards our President is getting more and more ridiculous with each passing day. Never have I ever seen a man so gracious, so humble and so classy in the face hatred, racism and discrimination.
As Politico reported, congressional Republicans are looking for the right way to “address” their opposition over Obama’s immigration policy (even though it was Reagan’s and Bush’s policy firsthand), “GOP aides and lawmakers” are considering the idea of “refusing to invite the president to give his State of the Union address.”
The angrier the Republicans grow and the uglier their discourse becomes, the more I am convinced that President Obama is doing his job correctly. The Republicans are absolutely determined to show not only the American people, but the world that Obama is the only grownup in their playroom. In spite of their every attempt since before his first inauguration to stop him from doing his job, he continues to do it while they can’t. And they continue to try to stop him.
Breitbart News said: “Congress should indicate to President Obama that his presence is not welcome on Capitol Hill as long as his ‘executive amnesty’ remains in place. The gesture would, no doubt, be perceived as rude, but it is appropriate.”
Let’s just remember one thing: when Gingrich and other Congressional Republicans tried to block President Clinton from delivering his State of the Union address in 1999, his approval rating shot up to 69%. That certainly backfired for the GOP.
The worst part of the GOP refusing the State of the Union is we’d be missing out on the great joy of the Republican and Tea Party’s rebuttals. Those are some of the best comedic performances of the year.
