White House press secretary Sarah Sanders dismissed calls for Trump’s tax returns on Fox News Sunday that by saying that she doesn’t think “this group of congressmen and women are smart enough” to vet the president’s tax records. So, now that Democrats have the House, she thinks Congress is too stupid to understand his taxes. Sanders’ boss has repeatedly said he would release his tax returns but that was before he took office, and now, he refuses to release them. She also alleged that it would be “dangerous” for Trump to go with the decades-long custom of presidents releasing their tax returns.
“This is a dangerous, dangerous road, and frankly, Chris, I don’t think Congress, particularly not this group of congressmen and women, are smart enough to look through the thousands of pages that I would assume that president trumps taxes will be,” Sanders told Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace. “My guess is most of them don’t do their own taxes and I certainly don’t trust them to look through the decades of success that the president has and determine anything.”

House Democrats, the ones Sanders thinks are stupid, formally requested the former reality show star’s tax returns. Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) asked IRS Commissioner Charles Retig to turn over six years of Trump’s personal and business tax records, which, after all of the conflicts of interest we’re witnessing, isn’t a strange request.
Neal had to send a second letter on Saturday to extend the deadline to turn over Trump’s taxes until April 23rd. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he expects the Treasury to respond to Neal by that date, but then he went on to call the deadline “arbitrary.”
When Barack Obama was running for re-election in 2012, Donald Trump called the president a “terrible student” and demanded that he release his academic records to the public. However, the headmaster at New York Military Academy got an order from his boss to find Trump’s academic records and help to bury them. Trump also dogged Obama for years over his racist birther conspiracy theory, but now, demanding to see his taxes, as he promised he’d do, is considered ‘dangerous.’
Republicans would have had a collective hissy fit for years if Obama had refused to release his taxes.
