More Than 1,000 People Attend Funeral of Unaccompanied Texas Veteran

Late last week the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas, posted the following notice on its social media accounts:

We have the distinct honor to provide a full military burial for unaccompanied United States Air Force Veteran Joseph Walker on MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. If you have the opportunity, please come out and attend. We do NOT leave Veterans behind.

News of the lone Airman’s funeral quickly travelled across social media. Mainstream media outlets, and military publications also picked up the story, hoping to boost attendance.

On Monday morning traffic was backed up for miles.

Rather than a sad and lonely farewell, on Monday January 28, 2019, Airman Walker was surrounded by thousands of well-wishers – his service and sacrifice not forgotten in the midst of the chaos and calamity.

Journalist Janet Shamlian Tweeted out an image of traffic lined out for miles near the cemetery where Airman Walker was to be buried this morning.

A lot of people showed up to pay their final respects.

A YouTube account with the user name “Proud of Your Freedom,” posted a short video clip from the Monday morning funeral service. According to the poster, more than a thousand people turned out to pay their respects.

Joseph Walker served in the Air Force from 1964 to 1968.

Rest in peace and thank you for your service.
