Republican Lawmaker Resigns In Disgrace After Posting Nude Photos Of Ex-Girlfriend On Social Media

State Rep. Nick Sauer (R-IL) was forced to resign on Wednesday after finding himself in the middle of a scandal after he posted, without consent, nude photos of his ex-girlfriend online for the purpose of catfishing men. Catfishing is a deceptive practice in which a person uses a fake identity on a social network account, for attention, bullying or as a romance scam. In this case, it appears that the latter was Sauer’s motivation. Sauer was assuming his former girlfriend, Kate Kelly’s, identity on Instagram, but she found out about when a man contacted her to say he had been speaking to a person for the past four months pretending to be her, according to the BBC.

Kelly filed a complaint with the Office of the Legislative Inspector General on Wednesday which says that Sauer later admitted to using her photos to catfish men.

“He came to my house & confessed to catfishing men with my photos for 2 years to at least 8 men,” she wrote. “He was unable to provide the names and begged that I let it go.”

According to Politico, Saur populated the Instagram account with nude photos of Kelly in order to lure men into “graphic” discussions.

Just hours after news broke of the scandal, Sauer resigned.

“As a result of the allegations by Kate Kelly, a former girlfriend, I have decided to resign,” Sauer wrote in a letter to the Clerk of the House of Representatives, according to Politico. “It is important that the citizens of the 51st District be fully represented. My ability to fulfill my obligations as a State Representative and public servant will be affected by the distraction of addressing these allegations. After speaking with my family, I feel it best to step away from my public responsibilities.”

Sauer and Kelly are both single. They met on the dating site Tinder in 2016 and had a long-distance relationship. In June of 2017, Kelly moved to Chicago from California in order to be closer to him but they broke up in March 2018 after Kelly said that she discovered he had been dating other women.

“The man that I loved and honored for over two years unfortunately did not exist,” Kelly said in an email. “Until I moved to Chicago to be closer to him, he and I would share very private photos with each other, as many couples do.”

Here’s the kicker: Sauer was a member of the state House Sexual Discrimination and Harassment Task Force.

Ladies, I think he’s single — just in case you’re looking.
