Holocaust Survivor Warns: Trump Has Turned America Into Pre-Holocaust Germany

Plenty of people have compared Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, that murderous leader of Germany’s Third Reich in the 1920s-1940s. However, there is always push back, with people saying that Trump may be bad, but he’s nothing like Hitler. His followers blind themselves to Trump’s bigotry and demonization of any number of minority groups, and elected officials and pundits act as if all that we are experiencing right now is normal. They brush aside the blatant racism, the rise in neo-Nazism and white nationalism. But, now, someone who knows exactly what life was like in Germany as the Holocaust approached is sounding the alarm: survivor of Buchenwald Concentration Camp, 79-year-old Stephen B. Jacobs.

Jacobs is rather young for a Holocaust survivor, and he was a child when he was taken to Buchenwald. However, he remembers the harrowing experience, and is warning America that what Donald Trump has done to this country in his short time in the Oval Office is not at all unlike what Hitler did in Germany. Jacobs says of Trump’s America:

“Things just go from bad to worse every day. There’s a real problem growing.”

“Things that couldn’t be said five years ago, four years ago, three years ago—couldn’t be said in public—are now normal discourse. It’s totally unacceptable.”

“We thought our country had changed. In fact, it didn’t. We were operating on a misconception. ‘My god, we elected a black president in the United States! Look how far we’ve come!’ We haven’t.”

Jacobs also knows Trump, because he, like the reality star turned wannabe “president,” is in the real estate business in New York. Jacobs says of Trump:

“I’m involved with New York real estate, I know this man personally. Trump is an enabler. Trump has no ideas. Trump is out for himself.”

“He’s a sick, very disturbed individual.”

“I couldn’t say that Trump is a fascist because you’ve got to know what fascism is. And I don’t think he has the mental power to even understand it.”

Well, whether or not Trump understands fascism is irrelevant at the present moment. He is enacting fascist policies and appealing to the fascists among us, who are ready to do to minorities of many stripes just what Hitler did to the German Jews, to the LGBTQ people, to the disabled, and other “undesirable” types in Nazi Germany.

America, we’d do well to listen to Stephen Jacobs. If there is anyone who would not take lightly the linking of the Holocaust to anything happening today, it is a survivor of those horrors. We must take heed before it is too late.
