Alabama Republican Speaks Out Against Arming Teachers…Because So Many Of Them Are Women

One Republican agrees with Democrats that arming teachers is a dumb idea — but for the most awful reasons.

According to Alabama state Rep. Harry Shiver, the problem isn’t the numerous teachers who already fire their weapons in schools (accidentally or otherwise). It’s not the fact that some teachers carelessly leave their loaded weapons in the bathrooms for kids to find. It’s that a lot of teachers are wimminfolk and they’s be right scared of guns ‘n’ stuff.

Most women — women who work as educators especially, according to Shiver — “are scared of guns,” and are far too delicate to be expected to handle the responsibility of carrying them in the classroom.

I’m not saying all (women), but in most schools, women are (the majority) of the teachers,” Shiver told AL.com. “Some of them just don’t want to (be trained to possess firearms). If they want to, then that’s good. But most of them don’t want to learn how to shoot like that and carry a gun.”

Shiver was discussing a bill proposed by fellow Republican Will Ainsworth that would allow schools to designate trained teachers and administrators to pack heat.

“I’ve heard … that 75 percent of Republicans support it, but I was there live and in person and I know what it is like in the schools,” Shiver says. “Most women wouldn’t like to be put in that position. I know from South Alabama, they wouldn’t.”

Shiver says that we need to protect “our ladies” by not expecting them to handle firearms. After all, that’s a man’s job. Just ask the trained teacher whose gun “accidentally” went off and injured three students recently. He’ll tell you.
