WATCH: And The Biggest Political LIAR Of 2015 Is… Totally Not A Surprise At All (VIDEO)

The nonpartisan fact-checkers at Politifact handed down their annual verdict for “Lie of the Year,” and it’s more or less the predictable choice.

And the Lie of the Year goes to… Donald Trump’s campaign “misstatements.”

First of all, why call it the “Lie of the Year,” then refer to the actual lies as “misstatements?” Lies are lies. “Misstatements” are more like accidental moments of derp.

Second of all, while Trump is the frontrunner for the GOP nomination, and he’s an extraordinarily popular figure on the GOP side, his lies haven’t really harmed anyone yet. If I had been given the opportunity to vote, I would’ve named the Center for Medical Progress and its co-conspirators in the Republican Party for perpetuating the obvious lies about Planned Parenthood. The consequences of the lies are darker and far more sinister than anything Trump has said as a candidate. (It also helps that he has very little chance of winning in November).

For example, there have been at least three attacks against Planned Parenthood facilities since the “fetal tissue” videos dropped during the summer. The third attack came in the form of another gun massacre in Colorado Springs, leaving three people dead and nine others wounded. Among the dead and wounded were six police officers — ostensibly “good guys with guns.” The shooter, Robert Lewis Dear, was obviously motivated by the videos to take violent action against the clinic.

But okay, it’s Trump.

PolitiFact has been documenting Trump’s statements on our Truth-O-Meter, where we’ve rated 76 percent of them Mostly False, False or Pants on Fire, out of 77 statements checked. No other politician has as many statements rated so far down on the dial.

That’s clearly a lot of lies compared with the one lie about Planned Parenthood (it does not sell baby parts). Here’s a video summary detailing the egregiousness of Trump’s lies.
