Black Man Attacked At Trump Rally: They Called Me ‘Monkey’ And ‘N*gger’ As They Beat Me

The African-American man who was attacked by supporters of Donald Trump at a rally in Birmingham, Alabama has spoken out — and the billionaire probably doesn’t like what he has to say. Mercutio Southall showed up at Trump’s Saturday rally with one thing in mind: reminding the 2016 presidential hopeful that the lives of African-Americans are important. After he yelled that “black lives matter,” on Trump’s orders, Southall was swarmed by violent white people who punched, kicked, and shoved him.

Southall says that the situation was much worse than it appeared on the widely-circulated video of the incident. In an interview with Think Progress, he explained that Trump’s fans hurled racial slurs and yelled “all lives matter” as they attacked him:

“It was just a sea of white faces. A lady kicked me in the stomach. A man kicked me in the chest. They called me ni*gger, monkey, and they shouted ‘All lives matter’ while they were kicking and punching me. So for all the people who are still confused at this point, they proved what ‘all lives matter’ meant. It means, ‘Shut up, ni*gger.’”

Southall says that he and two friends who were present with him were subject to harassment even before the attack. Earlier in the evening, a white attendee swatted a phone out of one of his fellow protesters’ hands after the man said “We want to show [Trump] he’s not welcome here” during a livestream of the event. For the most part, though, Trump supporters avoided Southall and his friends.

“There was like a six feet space on either side of us,” Southall explained. “The message was: this was not our town. This was not our place.”

Yes, the attack was horrible, and while Trump’s campaign says it doesn’t condone this sort of behavior, the billionaire set the record straight the following day, explaining that Southall’s assertion that black lives have value, too, is “disgusting.” Deeming the protester to be “obnoxious,” Trump said that “maybe he should have been roughed up” — an assertion with which his rabid fan base agrees.

To further emphasize his point that it’s perfectly OK to attack black people, Trump tweeted neo-Nazi propaganda containing wholly invented data from a fake research firm that was intended to smear black people as violent killers:

The fraudulent data Trump, who has been known to keep a book of Adolf Hitler’s speeches by his bedside, presented was so racist, even Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly called him out on it. Birmingham police spokesman Lt. Sean Edwards also agrees that Southall had it coming. “I would be a little cautious with Mercutio Southall,” he explained to CNN. “He has been an agitator from day one. Mercutio is always the agitator.” Think Progress notes the similarity between this characterization of Southall and Birmingham Police Chief Bull O’Conner’s description of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whom the Jim Crow-era law enforcement official called an “agitator” on a regular basis.

Southall says that the learning of the police became apparent when officers did nothing to protect him, but prevented him from defending himself:

“I was being choked right in front of a Birmingham Police officer and all he did was try to stop me from hitting the man who was choking me. But I’m supposed to trust y’all now?”

Despite the attack, Southall says he will continue to end racial oppression “by any means necessary”:

“For my children, my babies whose diapers I changed, who I sang to in their mom’s belly, who I read to and watched grow into beautiful young men, I’m not going to sit by and let shit keep happening like this while my sons are growing up in it. I will learn from history, because I have no interest in repeating it.”

Southall says he has not decided what, if any, legal action he will take. Law enforcement has refused to charge his attackers, and police — the same ones who call him an “agitator” and watched him get gang-attacked without intervening on his behalf — claim they have reached out to him unsuccessfully about filing a complaint.
