Democrats Refusing To Help Republicans Avoid Government Shutdown

Sometimes you just have to stand out of the way and let people fall on their asses in order to teach them a lesson:

Washington (CNN)House Democrats are fed up with the Republican divisions stalling action on a spending bill and may not be in the mood to help House Speaker John Boehner avoid another government shutdown.

As California Democratic Rep. Xavier Becerra put it to CNN Wednesday, “I certainly know that there is a growing frustration among Democrats that we’re not allowed in the room to help come up with the solution, but we’re expected to stop the Republicans from killing themselves.”

This, after all, is exactly what Republicans wanted, right? They told America that putting them in charge would solve all that horrible Washington gridlock that was 100% the fault of the Democrats. Of course, the reality turned out to be quite different. Since the very beginning, Republicans have humiliated themselves repeatedly for failing even the most basic tasks of governing, something I predicted a year ago when they took the Senate.

Now here we are, on the brink of another government shutdown, and there is literally no one they can blame. Yes, they’re going to say it’s Obama’s fault for not signing a bill that defunds Planned Parenthood but since most of the country doesn’t WANT Planned Parenthood defunded, that’s going to go over like a lead balloon.

But Democrats are not just thinking about standing to the side to watch Republicans throw themselves off a cliff, they’re thinking about pushing them:

Becerra, who chairs the House Democratic Caucus, said he is considering voting against a short-term funding bill, even if it doesn’t include any language to defund Planned Parenthood.

“I’m not interested in this Republican chaos,” he said, telling CNN that he opposes yet another bill that governs the country in “fits and starts.”

Normally, I wouldn’t agree that helping Republicans shut down the government is a good thing, but the GOP has forgotten how to govern responsibly. Right now, all they can do is lurch from one man-made crisis to the next, and that’s terrible for the country. If helping them reach rock bottom will help either get them out of office or¬†remember how to act like adults, I’m all for it!

Just as an aside, yet again, CNN fails journalism 101 with the following statement:

“Many conservatives insist any spending bill should block any federal funds for the women’s health organization after a series of secretly taped, edited videos released by an anti-abortion group purportedly show officials from the group talking about the sale of fetal body parts. Planned Parenthood denies any illegal activity.”

Here’s what it should have said:

“Many conservatives insist any spending bill should block any federal funds for the women’s health organization after a series of secretly¬†illegally taped, heavily and deceptively edited videos released by an anti-abortion group purportedly show officials from the group talking about the sale of fetal body parts. The videos have been carefully examined by forensics experts and have been found to have been so extensively altered that no court of law would allow them as evidence. Planned Parenthood denies any illegal activity and several investigations have already cleared them of any wrongdoing. What the videos actually show is officials from Planned Parenthood discussing the donation of fetal tissue samples for life-saving research. They also discuss being reimbursed for the cost of processing and transportation which is 100% legal and do not, at any time, discuss profiting from “sales” of the samples.

You’re welcome, CNN.
