Armed Oath Keepers Militia Going To Kentucky To Defend Kim Davis

Kim Davis broke the law by refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples in Kentucky, and now a team of armed right-wing militia is going to the state to defend her. It’s a recipe for trouble, as the Oath Keepers have announced that they are sending a “security detail” to defend Davis if she resumes refusing to issue licenses.

Davis was released from jail for being in contempt of court orders that she do her job and issue the licenses. Her claim that the bible is more legally binding than the U.S. Constitution and the Supreme Court (who ruled against her) has been supported by Republican presidential candidates like Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee.

The founder of the far-right Oath Keepers militia group, Stewart Rhodes, said he will go to Kentucky to join up with other members of his group. According to him, the local law enforcement authorities should have blocked U.S. Marshals form detaining Davis.

“As far as we’re concerned, this is not over,” he said, “and this judge needs to be put on notice that his behavior is not going to be accepted and we’ll be there to stop it and intercede ourselves if we have to. If the sheriff, who should be interceding, is not going to do his job and the governor is not going to do the governor’s job of interceding, then we’ll do it.”

There is of course a history of the right flouting the law and ending up in deadly confrontations with official law enforcement. The Oath Keepers were among those who backed racist rancher Cliven Bundy and his standoff with the Bureau of Land Management, who backed off in that episode, in the hopes they could de-escalate the situation ratcheted up by fringe groups.

In other instances, mass casualty events occurred at encounters like Ruby Ridge and the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas.

Will the mainstream right allow a law-breaking clerk to work in concert with an armed militia and again break the law? Or will they finally decide that while we are a religious naiton, America is not a Sharia state, where faith trumps the actual laws?
