Texas Sheriff Blames #BlackLivesMatter ‘Rhetoric’ For Deputy’s Murder: ‘Cops’ Lives Matter,Too’

On Friday, a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department was gunned down in a cold-blooded murder, and now officials think they may know why. Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman blamed the Black Lives Matter movement on Sunday’s shooting during a press conference.

Deputy Darren Goforth responded to a routine car accident call on Friday in suburban Houston. After the call, the officer stopped at a gas station to fill up his police car when he was allegedly ambushed by Shannon J. Miles. The 30-year-old man allegedly shot Goforth and continued firing as the officer fell to the ground. He was later arrested and has been charged with capital murder.

On Sunday, during a press conference Sheriff Hickman announced the apprehension of Miles and proceeded to blame Black Lives Matter for the deputy’s murder:

“Some of the very dangerous national rhetoric that’s out there today, our system of justice absolutely requires law enforcement to be present to protect our community. So at any point when the rhetoric ramps up to the point calculated, cold-blooded assassination of police officers happen, this rhetoric has gotten out of control. We’ve heard ‘black lives matter, all lives matter,’ well cops’ lives matter, too. So why don’t we just drop the qualifier and say ‘lives matter’ and take that to the bank.”

Listen, it is absolutely horrific that this police officer was gunned down. He was a husband, a father, and a member of the community he served, and it is very sad that his life was cut short by some dumbass with a gun. That being said, blaming a group of people who have suffered systematic racism for their entire lives, people who are shot in the back for no reason, people who are sick and tired of watching their loved ones be brutalized by police officers, is ignorant.

Hickman has no idea why this officer was murdered, but he stood up in front of the cameras and blamed a group of oppressed people. When we say “Black Lives Matter,” we are not saying that other lives, like cops’ lives, don’t matter! We are giving a voice to a community that has been silenced through brutality for centuries.

We have no idea why Deputy Goforth lost his life on Friday, but placing the blame on activists is irresponsible and they deserve an apology. We live in a country that was founded on activism, and the only way to force change is to speak out and make your voices heard, and that is what Black Lives Matter is doing. They are not advocating the murder of police officers and the suggestion that they are further feeds the “violent black thugs” myth and proves that this movement is desperately needed.
