Because Of Family Planning, Over 760,000 Abortions Were Prevented (In One Year Alone)

I could never understand how someone could be against abortion but also be against family planning services and contraceptives. It’s really a simple concept: if you provide contraceptives, women won’t have an unwanted pregnancy, and thus they won’t have an abortion.

And here’s a little fact that proves that simple concept: in 2010 alone, family planning services prevented over 760,000 abortions and saved the American taxpayer over $10 billion (or saved them $5.68 for every dollar the government spent on contraceptives that year), according to Jennifer Frost, a senior researcher for a study released just two years ago from the Guttmacher Institute.

The study found:

In 2010, publicly funded contraceptive services helped women prevent 2.2 million unintended pregnancies; 1.1 million of these would have resulted in unplanned births and 760,000 in abortions. Without publicly funded contraceptive services, the rate of unintended pregnancies, unplanned births and abortions in the United States would all be 66% higher; the rates for teens would be 73% higher.

The health centers that have been funded through Title X programs have helped over 4.7 million women in total with various health services, including the prevention of 2.2 million unwanted pregnancies. Thirty-six percent of clients receiving care from publically funded family planning centers are  served from Planned Parenthood.

So, when Jeb Bush says “do we really need” half a billion dollars for women’s health, just ask him three simple questions. Do you want to prevent 760,000 abortions? Do you want women to have access to healthy, legal services? Do you want to save over $10 billion a year?

Ask yourself this: would saving an extra $500 million a year really be worth an unintended pregnancy rate 35% higher and 42% higher amongst teenagers?

The answer to all of those should be yes. But for some reason, Republicans view these things as burdensome, and want to cut, cut, cut. Never mind that is saves the national as a whole quite a bit of money. This isn’t, nor should it be, an issue of money. Never mind it prevents unintended pregnancies. And never mind that it has stopped hundreds of thousands of pregnancies from being aborted.

Family planning services have done a great service not just to women and families, but to the United States as a whole. Those on the right are making the defunding of these programs a staple in their platforms.

Senators Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio have all voted in favor of a Senate bill to eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood and Scott Walker has boasted of defunding it. Jeb Bush also played his part in helping to defund it while governor of Florida.

So, remember what the consequences of the decision to defund these services would be: more abortions, more unwanted pregnancies, and a higher teen pregnancy rate.

Is that what this country needs?
