Ardent Suitor Offers 50 Cows, 70 Sheep, And 30 Goats For Malia Obama’s Hand In Marriage (VIDEO)

Busy 16-year-old Malia Obama may not have time for dating, but that doesn’t mean she lacks for suitors. The Jerusalem Post reports President Barack Obama recently received a rather unusual proposal from a young man named Felix Kiprono.

The young attorney from Kenya seems awfully excited about Obama’s upcoming visit for the Nairobi Summit, and is so smitten with Malia he has offered her father a munificent dowry of 50 cows, 70 sheep, and 30 goats. That may not sound impressive, but as of 2013, the annual per-person income for the average Kenyan was just $1,245.

Even just a single good dairy cow can provide a family with a reasonable living in Kenya. That costs around $160,000 Kenyan shillings (Kys)  or $1,636 per cow. Which means 50 cows add up to a princely sum of $81,800. Add that to $8,400 worth of sheep and $2,400 goats, and Felix Kiprono and his blushing bride-to-be Malia Obama could be well on their way to a life of luxury.

Felix Kiprono told reporters cupid’s arrow first struck back in 2008, when Malia Obama was just 10 years old. That sounds super-creepy, but Kiprono looks like he’s barely left childhood himself.

“I got interested in her in 2008. As a matter of fact, I haven’t dated anyone since and promise to be faithful to her. I have shared this with my family and they are willing to help me raise the bride price.”

Kiprono also has some strong ideas about the life he and Malia Obama will live together.

“Ours will be a simple life. I will teach Malia how to milk a cow, cook ugali (a starchy dish) and prepare mursik (a sour milk) like any other Kalenjin woman.”

Wikipedia describes the Kalenjins as a “Nilotic ethnic group inhabiting the Rift Valley Province in Kenya. They are estimated to number a little over 4.9 million individuals as per the Kenyan 2009 census.

So far, neither Malia nor anyone else in her family have said anything about this fascinating marriage proposal whatsoever. Back in 2009, another man from Kenya offered Bill and Hillary Clinton 40 goats and 20 cows for the hand of Chelsea Clinton. As paltry as that seems in comparison, CNN’s Fareed Zarkaria declared that, given the severity of the economic collapse at the time, that wasn’t a bad offer.
