Black Business Woman Orders Catfish, Gets Heaping Helping Of Racism (VIDEO, IMAGES)

Hungry? Drop by Huck Finn’s Cafe in the French Quarter of New Orleans for some tasty local fare: Like po’ boys, jambalaya, muffalettas, and a heaping helping of racism. Seriously, it’s not every day that a black person eats at a restaurant and receives a racist message along with their bill. Oh wait, yes it is.

Now, Huck Finn’s Cafe’s in some hot water. And not the kind of boiling hot water that simmers a basket of fresh-from-the-docks crawfish to a state of succulent, briny perfection. It all started when Liryca Neville, a New Orleans business woman (who happens to be black) and her coworkers came in for lunch Thursday. They ordered a thin catfish platter, french fries, a caesar salad, and some sort of side salad. And then they got the bill. Printed on the Huck Finn’s receipt, along with the various items ordered, was:

“N-WORD 100 % DISLIKE.”

Unfortunately for the Huck Finn Cafe’s nasty server, Hell hath no fury like a well-connected musician/activist mom in a musical town, whose daughter has just been slighted by some lily-white, [email protected] waiter.

An incensed Gaynielle H. Neville posted a photo of the receipt on her Facebook page, it went viral, and friends, neighbors and others stepped up to the plate and shared like crazy.

What baffled this writer at first was …. What WAS that $16.00 itemized on the receipt labeled as “N*gger 100% Dislike?”

But 30 minutes of wading through over 500 comments on this viral Facebook post (3,707 shares at the time of this writing and counting) shed some light on the subject. Apparently, the younger Neville receives a discount at Huck Finn’s because she works for them as a marketing consultant. Apparently, the server resented having to give her the discount. Julie Jenkins declared on the comment thread, in answer to a previous commenter who asked about the $16 discount:

“You’re not going to believe this, but [Neville] got a discount because she does marketing for them!”

Comments on Gaynielle H. Neville's Facebook post with the racist comment on her daughter's receipt from Huck Finn's Cafe: Apparently, Liryca Neville gets a discount because she works for them as a marketing consultant! Sara Griffin I don't like what is printed on the receipt but why is it a discount of $16--this makes no sense. Was it some kind of discount the server didn't want to give but had to? It's good that server is gone. Julie Jenkins You're not going to believe this, but she got a discount because she does marketing for them!

Maybe Huck Finn’s server got ticked off by Neville’s discount.

Wow. And when the Huck Finn’s Cafe managers got wind of the hullabaloo, they posted a statement on their website declaring that they were “shocked and appalled” and had fired the waiter who served up the nasty n-word receipt.

There’s just one problem with the Huck Finn Cafe’s disavowal of their server’s nasty racism: He’s one of the top brass’ sons.

Many of those commenting on Neville’s Facebook post are also locals. It didn’t take long for someone to spot the server’s name at the top of the receipt (Dakota C.), do a quick search, and find his Facebook page.

And, alas, the plot sickens. Cushman not only found the Facebook page for the racist waiter at Huck Finn’s Cafe, she also dug in and figured out who his father is: A manager — possibly even an owner — of Huck Finn’s Cafe! She then posted the screenshot and crowed:

“Daddy’s FB page. Go ahead. Message away!”

Kyle Crochet's Facebook profile.

Well, locals down in N’awlins know what they know, but this writer can’t responsibly report this without an actual source, right? Crochet’s LinkedIn profile describes himself as “Director of Operations” for Brechtel Hospitality, which owns and runs several restaurants in the area. But it makes no mention of Crochet running Huck Finn’s Cafe. So why do so many folks in New Orleans claim Crochet runs the place? Maybe it has something to do with local scuttlebutt. If there were ever any public mentions of Crochet’s association with Huck Finn’s Cafe, he’s managed to scrub them squeaky clean. But Crochet seems to have posted his resume online. Here’s a screen shot from Crochet’s resume — with Huck Finn’s Cafe featured as his current occupation, albeit with no title — from Zip Recruiter, a database for online resumes.

07 Racist restaurant receipt

Adding racist comments to restaurant receipts is no trivial task.

We keep hearing about racist items printed out on restaurant receipts, but here’s the crazy thing. If you’ve ever worked as a restaurant server or operated a cash register — as this writer has — you may recall that adding racist comments to a receipt is no trivial task. Waiters and waitresses at restaurants in high-traffic locations — like the ones at Huck Finn’s Cafe — make most of their money from tips earned during lunch hour, happy hour, weekend brunch, and other peak times. They’re usually rushing around to keep customers happy and make hay while the sun shines.

Most restaurants now use what’s called POS systems to track orders and ring up purchases. POS stands for “point of sale,” but most staffers (and many customers) think the acronym means something else entirely.

If you take a look at the screenshot from the screen of a common cash register system used by restaurant servers these days, you’ll wonder how that POS Huck Finn’s waiter found time to customize a receipt with a racist order entry. The mere act of entering an order — let alone customizing it for no mayo or heavy on the (hot) sauce — requires many clicks and drilling down through multiple screens. How can this guy possibly have enough time during a busy lunch shift to add a new inventory item with a special racist comment? That takes an awful lot of spare time and hate.

restaurant order entry pos system.

As for Crochet’s son, you’ve got to wonder where he got his toxic level of racism from. . . Some on the comment thread speculated that the now former Huck Finn’s Cafe server must have grown up in a home that was comfortable with those kind of racist statements, otherwise he would have known better.

Huck Finn’s Cafe gets a reality check.

Here’s the video with the news report on the racist receipt from Huck Finn’s restaurant from The Times Picayune/Nola.Com. Apparently, the locals are busy smacking down Huck Finn’s restaurant with some damaging — but alas, truthful — reviews on Yelp! that may make future tourists think twice about patronizing them.
