Watch Paul Ryan Lie Through His Shiny White Teeth To Deny Republicans Gutted Amtrak (VIDEO)

On Thursday, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) went on Fox News to lie through his shiny white teeth about the GOP’s role in the fatal Amtrak crash. And of course, Brian Kilmeade let him.

Although the investigators have just begun combing the wreckage of the Amtrak train for clues, one thing is crystal clear: Our nation’s railways, trains and other infrastructure are long overdue for upgrades and repairs, and Republicans refuse to pay for them.

Some have called Republicans out on their cruel and foolhardy budget slashing, but Ryan claims we’re “rushing to judgement.”

“What happened yesterday, we need to find out what went wrong with Amtrak before jumping to conclusions and […] doubling spending on government programs Earlier reports [say] this was human error to begin with, so I think before we rush to judgement and try doubling the size of government programs, let’s just cool down and figure out what happened and how to prevent these things from happening again.”

Then Ryan even has the gall to look into the camera and tell a bald-faced lie: Instead of tightening their purse strings to strangle Amtrak within an inch of its life, Ryan claims the GOP actually did vote to fund the speed control systems that would have prevented the crash.

“Congress already authorized, and mandated, these sort of speed control systems to be put in place. Of course it wasn’t put in place in here at this time.”

When Kilmeade asks point-blank whether Congress funded the speed control system upgrade for Amtrak, Ryan claims they did.

“Yes. We already passed an Amtrak funding bill, an authorization bill, earlier this year, and the appropriations process is working its way through it right now.”

What Amtrak funding bill was that? The one that sane lawmakers were forced to vote down because of that no abortions for 10-year-old rape victims clause they snuck in?

The truth about Ryan, the GOP and Amtrak.

In 2011, Ryan and his GOP cohorts voted down President Barack Obama’s American Jobs Act, which would have created jobs while shoring up our nation’s infrastructure. All the Democrats asked for was a paltry $2 billion for Amtrak, but the GOP refused.

To make matters even worse, the GOP-run House voted to cut Amtrak’s budget by another $270 million … just a few hours after seven people died in the twisted wreckage of the train crash. They didn’t even have the decency to wait until America’s fickle attention span had shifted to something else.

Many have already taken Republicans to task for their cruel and irresponsible policies. Make no mistake: Some Americans may say they hate “big government,” but when push comes to shove, we still expect our government to keep us safe. Republicans somehow convinced us we can keep things running without having to pay for it, and only now are we starting to realize that’s a bald-faced lie.

Politico reports Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) blasted his Republican colleagues for this callous lack of regard for people’s safety.

“Last night, we failed them […] It’s not just our trains. It is our bridges that are failing. It is our highways that are congested and riddled with potholes. It is our runways, our airports…We are divesting from America.”

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Democrat, also angrily blasted House Republicans for cutting Amtrak’s budget in an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, calling them “pathetic,” “embarrassing,” and “SOBs.”

“Those SOBs, and that’s all I can call them, these SOBs didn’t even have the decency to table the vote. Their policy is terrible. This country used to have the world’s best infrastructure [referring to how our infrastructure ranking has plummeted from #1 in the world 11 years ago to #12, below Singapore and Iceland].”

On Weds, ABC News reported that the train crash left commuters around Philadelphia stranded and scrambling for ways to get home. It has also caused major disruption for commuters and travelers along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, which runs between Boston and Washington, D.C. and carries over 750,000 passengers on 2,200 trains per day. In an update, Amtrak told ABC they are to have partial service restored by Monday and full service by Tuesday.
