Another NRA-Approved Tragedy: 5-Year-Old Boy Kills Baby Brother With Gun Lying Around House (VIDEO)

A five-year-old boy in Missouri is now scarred for life after he shot and killed his nine-month-old baby brother with a gun he found in his parent’s bedroom – the same room the baby’s playpen was located. The NRA must be ecstatic.

After all, Missouri conservatives have made every effort to ban gun control so as to make guns more accessible to everyone, including children.

The state doesn’t require permits to purchase a gun, nor does Missouri require firearm registration or owners licenses. Furthermore, trigger-happy Missourians approved an amendment to the state constitution in 2014 banning legislation to restrict access to guns, including handguns and assault weapons.

Almost three months after Republicans and the National Rifle Association made Missouri a gun-obsessed wonderland, a five-year-old boy in Elmo, Missouri, will now have to live the rest of his life knowing that he killed his own brother because conservatives refuse to take up the cause of gun safety and control.

The boy found the .22 caliber magnum revolver on a shelf built into the bed in his parent’s room. In the same room, the boy’s baby brother was in his playpen near the bed. Then the boy fired the loaded and non-child proof pistol, killing the nine-month-old with a shot to the head. The mother told police that her child had actually been shot and killed with a paintball gun, but the police know a death by gun when they see it.

There were two other children in the home at the time of the shooting, a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old, who were both taken to a neighbor’s home with the 5-year-old while police handled the incident.

Shooting instructor Don Pind told Fox 4 that these kinds of accidental shootings are the easiest to prevent. Simply placing a trigger lock on the gun would prevent kids from firing it, but Pind says the best thing a gun owner can do is never leave a gun in the open within reach of a child. Fox 4 also noted that guns are one of the top three killers of children according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Think Progress reports that a study in the journal Pediatrics estimates that 7,000 children end up in the ER each year with gunshot injuries. An estimated 3,000 die from them.

This is why we need gun control laws and consequences for adults who leave loaded guns within reach of children. The charges in this case should range from felony child endangerment to negligent homicide, but the county is setting up a child fatality review board to determine whether or not the parents should face any punishment for the death of their child.

Are Republicans and the NRA proud of themselves? Their ignorance and lack of concern about the dangers posed by guns to the health and lives of Americans should be held partly responsible for every gun death that occurs because of their effort to turn the nation into a Wild West fantasy world.

What’s also sad is that the NRA used to be all about gun safety, too. But now the only thing the organization cares about is how many guns they can put in people’s hands and how much money they can generate for gun manufacturers and themselves. The NRA doesn’t give a damn about a nine-month-old being shot dead. They only care about lining their own pockets, which means they’ll probably claim that if only the baby had a gun too, he’d still be alive.

Seriously, when will NRA members wake the hell up and rebuke the corrupt child endangerment organization they belong to?
