These Windowless Planes Are The Future And They Look Amazing (VIDEO)

The Center for Process Innovation (CPI) has come out with a cool concept video for an airplane that uses flexible screens to make it appear as if the plane is see through. The U.K. based technology company envisions a windowless plane that can give passengers a panoramic view of the sky. They would accomplish this by covering the fuselage of the plane with flexible OLED screens and have them display real-time video recorded by cameras attached to the outside of the aircraft.

The displays would be used for entertainment purposes as well. In the video, real-time information pops up on the screen about places that are being flown over.

In addition to looking amazing, there are many practical aspects of this hypothetical plane, as well. Replacing windows with thin display screens would drastically reduce fuel consumption by decreasing the amount of weight on the plane.

CPI writes on their website,

“Weight is a constant issue on any aircraft. Over 80% of the fully laden weight of a commercial airliner is the aircraft itself and its fuel. For every 1% reduction in weight, the approximate fuel saving is 0.75%. If you save weight, you save fuel. And less fuel means less CO2 emissions into the atmosphere and lower operational cost… everyone wins.”

Air travel results in huge amounts of CO2 pollution. The Center for Biological Diversity reports,

“Aircraft emit staggering amounts of CO2, the most prevalent manmade greenhouse gas. In fact, they currently account for 11 percent of CO2 emissions from U.S. transportation sources and 3 percent of the United States’ total CO2 emissions. All told, the United States is responsible for nearly half of worldwide CO2 emissions from aircraft.”

The CPI says that they are currently working on the technology to make this concept a reality. They claim that they can begin to start full production on this technology in at least five years.
