Report: Sarah Palin Uses Her SarahPAC Like A Personal Bank Account And Rarely On Campaigns

In a revelation that may shock the Fox News crowd, and absolutely no one else, a report by Open Secrets reveals that Sarah Palin has collected a ton of money for her political action committee fund, but rarely used it on anything but paying her own bills.

Self-promotion being both Palin’s bread-and-butter, but also quite expensive, Palin instead continually used her SarahPAC money to foot the bill for travel and hotel expenses when she wanted to fly somewhere to be in front of a camera. According to Open Secrets, Palin’s fund was flush with money (having accrued several million dollars in donations in the last few years), but almost none of it has been spent on politics. While the leadership PAC was meant to help conservative candidates that Mama Grizzly Palin approved of win elections in 2014, a measly $45,000 has been spent on doing so. The rest either sits idly in the bank or is long gone due to Palin’s personal expenses.

Out of $1.4 million the PAC had available in the third quarter — $978,000 sitting in the bank at the beginning of the July 1-Sept. 30 period, plus another more than $433,000 raised during that time — SarahPAC managed to donate just $45,000 to fellow Republicans running in the midterms. That’s a little more than 3 percent.

For the two-year 2014 cycle, the former Alaska governor’s PAC, a vehicle that helps her stay in the game amid talk that she may run in the 2016 presidential contest, has raised $2.5 million on top of more than $1.1 million that was in the bank at the start of the cycle. It has spent $2.7 million, with about $150,000 — or 5.5 percent — going to candidates.

Considering 2014 is set to become the most expensive midterm campaign season in history, donating just $45,000 (or $150,000 over two years) to campaigns is a little like using an eyedropper to water your flowers in a rainstorm. In short, she’s done absolutely nothing to help candidates, despite promising to do so on SarahPAC’s website homepage.

So she isn’t helping real conservatives get to Washington, but she did help someone during these two years of free money: Sarah Palin.

Again, here’s Open Secrets:

What did SarahPAC spend most of its money on, then, in the third quarter? Many of the same consultants she has used all along — for speechwriting, fundraising, logistics and research. There’s even someone paid to consult on “coalitions.” Travel, presumably for Palin, is part of the equation; a PAC like this is useful for keeping a high profile nationally without having to pay those pesky airline and hotel tabs out of personal funds. And the PAC sent $10,885 to HarperCollins — publisher of all three of Palin’s books — for “books for donor fulfillment.” That wasn’t the only book purchase by the committee: A lump sum of $13,000 was listed as being spent for “lodging, SUV rental, books for donors.”

In other words, Palin’s political fund serves to exclusively promote all-things Palin.

Amazingly, there is nothing overtly illegal about fleecing your fanbase into giving you money to spend on SUV’s and books. A leadership PAC like Palin’s has almost zero restrictions on what the owners’ of the PAC can do with the money. So it may be unethical, but it’s not criminal. Instead, it’s Palin doing what she always does: Use her “political firecracker” brand to further enrich herself without the remotest possibility of using any of that money or energy towards actually affecting politics. What a racket.

Out of interest, the nine candidates who did receive Palin’s money were almost unanimously bad investments. Several of the candidates she’s given money to already lost in their primaries. One was running unopposed (so why did he need campaign funds?), and Joe Miller, the Alaskan Tea Party candidate who lost spectacularly to a more moderate Republican in the primaries for Alaska’s U.S. Senate race. Her PAC’s track record is so bad that at this point it’s starting to look like maybe spending the money on SUV rentals really was the best use of it.

Palin, when not having her travel expenses covered by her leadership PAC, has been milking her fans in other ways, too. Currently (but probably not for much longer) Palin runs her own internet channel where she charges patriots ten bucks a month to hear her spew non-sequitors about Muslim Socialist Kenyan Dictator Obummer. It launched just a few months ago and already everyone, including Sarah Palin, seems bored with it. Apparently, it’s slowly dawning on her that it’s hard to fill the airwaves with content when you have nothing to say but that Obama sucks.

And while doing all that fleecing, she has been pretending to consider running for president again. She has absolutely no chance of being nominated, of course, but she likes to dangle it out there every four years just to watch her Palin-heads squeal.

So, next time you see Palin on Fox News or a television promo for Duck Dynasty spare a thought for the poor conservative donor who paid for her to get there thinking that his or her money was going towards something useful.
