Nikki Haley Defends Flying Confederate Flag On Statehouse Grounds: Corporate CEOs Haven’t Told Me To Take It Down (VIDEO)

South Carolina Republican Governor Nikki Haley revealed who really controls the state during a debate about whether or not the Confederate flag should be removed from the statehouse grounds.

Her Democratic opponent Vincent Sheheen strongly supported taking the racist flag down and putting it in a museum so that the people of South Carolina could move forward united as one people under one flag — the American flag.

SHEHEEN: I think the people of South Carolina are tired of having an image across America that’s not truly who we are. I think we’re tired of corrupt leaders, of unethical elected officials. I think we’re tired of having an image that we’re stuck in the past and divided… I believe that it’s time that we retire the Confederate flag to a place of respect, where the history and this great state can be told and that we all rally together under a flag that unites us all, the American flag, that looks toward the future, and not the past.

Haley responded by calling the flag a “sensitive issue” and seemed to imply that it hasn’t been removed from statehouse grounds because CEOs haven’t told her to take the flag down, as if corporations are in charge of the state government.

What I can tell you is over the last three and a half years, I spent a lot of my days on the phones with CEOs and recruiting jobs to this state. I can honestly say I have not had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag.

Haley then claimed that South Carolina fixed its racist image simply because it elected her as governor. Haley is Indian-American. She also claimed that the image is fixed because she appointed an African-American to serve in the US Senate. Never mind the fact that the people of South Carolina didn’t actually get to vote for the senator, therefore not really fixing the state’s image at all. Haley is basically repeating the same line that the GOP has been spewing since 2008 when President Obama was first elected- that racism in America is over because the country elected the first African-American president. Of course, as we all know, racism does still exist, especially among Republicans and in the South.

Libertarian candidate Steve French agreed with Sheheen, however, that the flag needs to be removed because it makes South Carolina look like a “backwoods good ol’ boy network. And that flag, I think, represents a lot of division in this state, and we need to be coming together.”

Here’s the video:

The Confederate flag has been a symbol of racism and division for decades. It represents a treasonous era in our history that resulted in the deaths of 600,000 Americans during the Civil War, when the South fought to preserve the evil institution of slavery that had plagued our nation since its founding. Clinging onto it only proves that many southern conservatives are still stuck in the past and long for it to return. The fact that Nikki Haley seems to need permission from corporate CEOs to do the right thing is also disturbing. It makes one wonder who is really in charge in South Carolina.
