A Republican candidate for the Colorado statehouse is claiming that he was just joking when he accused a gay Democratic congressman of plotting to behead Christians.

Former Navy chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt sent out an email this past weekend asserting that Colorado Rep. Jared Polis would join ISIS to behead Christians in America who oppose same-sex marriage and LGBT rights. The email was sent out in the wake of video footage of James Foley being executed by Islamic extremists.

“The openly homosexual Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) introduced a revised bill to force Christian employers and business owners to hire and promote homosexuals with ZERO RELIGIOUS EXEMPTIONS for Christians who want to opt out.

“Polis ‘wants sexual orientation and gender identity treated the same way as race, religion, sex, and national origin, when it comes to employment protections,’ claims the Advocate, under the headline “Polis trims ENDA’s religious exemption.

“Dr. Chaps’ comment: The open persecution of Christians is underway. Democrats like Polis want to bankrupt Christians who refuse to worship and endorse his sodomy. Next he’ll join ISIS in beheading Christians, but not just in Syria, right here in America.”

The email stirred outrage across the state and to their credit, Colorado Republicans quickly condemned Klingenschmitt and his words. A spokesman for the state GOP said “Gordon does not speak on behalf of the Republican Party, and his comments in no way reflect the views of the Party. Gordon needs to give a sincere apology.”

But Klingenschmitt didn’t give a sincere apology. Instead, he claimed he was just using hyperbole and accused Democrats of not having a sense of humor in a video posted to Youtube on Monday. In short, the anti-gay conservative claimed his hateful comments were just a joke.

“This weekend I sent out an email alert to my constituents in which I used hyperbole. You know what hyperbole is. It’s a literary device where you exaggerate to make a point. Well, apparently some Democrats do not have a sense of humor and they were offended by some of the things I said using hyperbole this weekend.”

Here’s the video via Youtube.

When conservatives like Klingenschmitt says things like this, they’re not joking. They’re making serious false accusations to rile up their base. Then when they get called out for their hateful lies, they try to cover their asses by claiming it was all just a joke. Well, beheading someone is not funny at all. Accusing a House Democrat of conspiring to murder people to push a hateful agenda against the LGBT community is not hilarious in the slightest. How a hateful bigot like Gordon Klingenschmitt ever won a primary in Colorado is just unfathomable. However, in a rare instance of bipartisanship, Republicans joined Democrats in condemning him. Hopefully, this convinces Republican voters to reject Klingenschmitt as well and he will lose by a landslide on Election Day. Because the people of Colorado deserve way better.
