Elizabeth Warren Hammers Republicans On Senate Floor For Opposing Contraception For Women (VIDEO)

Elizabeth_Warren_s640x427Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren continued her crusade against Republicans earlier this week when she slammed them for waging war against contraception.

The day before Senate Republicans callously blocked the Protect Women’s Health From Corporate Interference Act, Warren took to the floor to call them out for taking America backwards at the expense of women’s health.

The legislation would have reversed the terrible sexist decision made by five Catholic male Supreme Court Justices in the Hobby Lobby case. That decision allows employers to force their religious beliefs down the throats of their employees. Basically, business owners can claim a religious exemption from any law they don’t like. In this case, The “Christian” extremist family who owns Hobby Lobby wants to deny their female employees birth control coverage in their health insurance plans. But as an advocate for women’s rights, Warren fought back.

Guys, this is 2014, not 1914. Most Americans thought this was settled long, long ago. But for some reason, Republicans keep dragging us back here over and over and over again.

The Hobby Lobby case is stunning, but not entirely surprising. Giant corporations and their right-wing allies fight every day in Congress to protect their own privileges and to bend the laws to benefit themselves. They devote enormous resources to the task. Sometimes, we beat them anyway.

Republicans have been waging a state by state war on women. Contraception has been a favorite target of conservative for quite some time. They claim that contraception is the same thing as getting an abortion, but science tells us that isn’t the case. The most popular forms of contraception that the GOP wants to ban forever, including Plan B, merely prevent sperm and egg from joining. In other words, it blocks conception from happening in the first place. But Republicans deny this science because what they really want is to force women to be pregnancy machines who have to get permission from men to have lives.

Of course, this issue is a huge reason why Republicans have been trounced at election time by female voters, which is why conservative “Christians” are now calling for banning women from voting.

Despite Republican claims, contraception is not an abortion. In fact, contraception actually prevents abortions by preventing unwanted pregnancies in the first place. If conservatives really want to reduce the number of abortions in America, they should support contraception access and help Democrats reverse the Hobby Lobby decision by passing this bill. If they don’t, they can expect more women to vote against them in elections to come, and they can expect women like Elizabeth Warren to continue blasting them in public for being anti-women.
