Gun “enthusiasts” bristle when they hear the term “ammosexual.” But when a gun nut, oh, excuse me, “responsible gun owner,” falls asleep holding his weapon while watching gun videos, how are we not supposed to believe that for a lot of these people, their guns are a penis substitute?
According to LehighValleyLive.com, 37 year old Wind Gap, Pennsylvania resident Greg Philip Winnick was holding his Rebel Arms AR-15 when he fell asleep. He awoke when the gun discharged. Sydney and Tabitha Merrick, who live next door to Winnick, told police that a loud noise awakened them, and they discovered a hole in the wall of the bedroom that abuts Winnick’s apartment. They also found damage to the ceiling, and another hole above a light switch. Police say the bullet traveled just above the mattress where the Merricks were sleeping. There were also two children, ages 1 and 2, in the Merrick’s apartment at the time.
Winnick told police that he had been awake for over 24 hours when the incident occurred. For some reason, this latest example of a “responsible gun owner” decided that he was alert enough to sit at his computer with his loaded gun across his lap. And what was Winnick doing at the computer? He told police he had installed a new trigger on his AR-15, and he was watching YouTube videos about it when he fell asleep. Police records say that Winnick “vaguely” remembers attaching a magazine to the weapon, but he doesn’t remember putting a round in the chamber.
Winnick was charged with aggravated assault, discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure and recklessly endangering another person. He was released on $50,000 bail.
Fortunately no one was hurt in this incident. But will the Merricks ever feel comfortable with their neighbor again? It’s hard to see how they could. Winnick illustrates the problem that many people have with ammosexuals: they claim to be responsible in their use of firearms, but a good portion of them prove to be anything but responsible. What is more irresponsible than loading a gun in an apartment and sitting at a computer with that gun across your lap when you have been up for more than 24 hours straight? Thanks to his poor decision making, Winnick may not have to worry about his guns for much longer. Aggravated assault is a felony. If convicted, Winnick faces up to ten years in prison, and a $25,000 fine. He will also lose his right to own a gun. But no worries. He will still be able to pass his time watching gun porn on YouTube. He’ll just have to find a substitute for his gun.
