Republican Candidate Calls For Modern-day ‘Operation Wetback’

We all know the final lines of Emma Lazarus’ stirring poem The New Colossus. In just a few stanzas the ethos of America was spelled out to the world for all to see. And that is that this far off, foreign land will be home to all who seek to secure their life, their liberty and their happiness. But the entirety of that work also launches the idea of American exceptionalism that conservatives frequently idealogue-asm over without caring or attempting to put any historical context to the notion.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles.

One could ask, with regard to our current political atmosphere around the issue of immigration, ‘What would Emma Lazarus think?’. It’s bad enough that one party refuses to see those affected by our broken policies as even being human. Now, out of Montana, one of the possible candidates for that states lone seat to the House of Representatives, Drew Turiano, believes immigration is the single worst problem our nation faces. Well, to be more to the point, Turiano sees immigration as the single worst problem the Republican party faces.

We should have a moratorium on all immigration to this country or — according to all the data — it will be the end of the Republican party and conservatism in ten years or less.

There you have it. Turiano sees immigration as detrimental to the conservative movement. He is yet another candidate unable to recognize that the Republican party is in trouble perhaps because of their stances on issues like healthcare, Benghazi, Fast & Furious, the IRS, entering wars of choice based on lies to the American people, etc., etc. No. It’s immigration. But Turiano didn’t stop there.

Most immigrants who come to America are big government people, so they’re going to support the party of big government — the Democrats. They’re not going to support the party of small government — the Republicans.

Why would they want to support the Republican Party anyway? Mr. Obama [that’s President Obama, sir] and the Democrats give them free education, free health care, free welfare, free housing — free everything!

I can only assume that last bit was a ham-handed toss of red meat to the true low information voters that comprise the base of the Republican party. We are now five-plus years into the Obama administration and I, for one, am waiting on my handout of free stuff. I mean, I haven’t even gotten my Obama phone yet. And as perhaps the most (unfortunately) effective deportation President this Union has ever elected, Turiano’s words just don’t ring true.
And then Turiano’s argument goes full crazy. He cites, as fact, a situation that never happened to build his argument that without the Republican party, the Democrats will destroy the country by allowing, nay, facilitating its abandonment of Christianity. The situation he alludes to (Democrats booing the mention of ‘God’ at their 2012 Charlotte convention) never happened but that doesn’t stop the right wing blogoshere, echo chamber and info bubble from parroting it among themselves.

Who are these people — these Democrats — who are going to rule America in perpetuity? They’re not Jackson Democrats, they’re not even Truman Democrats. I really don’t even know who the Hell these people are. All I know is, they booed God at their convention a couple of years ago.

What does this mean for the future of Christianity in this country? All I know is that Mr. Obama [again, that’s President Obama, sir] has populated his administration with self-professed Marxists and Maoists. What does this mean for the future of the Constitution? The Bill of Rights? Capitalism? Humanity?

Following Turiano’s logic, immigration, allowed to continue recklessly and unabated, will shred the Constitution of the United States, negate the Bill of Rights, cause capitalism to crumble and will, ultimately, be the entire undoing of humanity. That sounds logical.

From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Turiano, whose flawed arguments skirted the edges of bigotry without actually wading into it, has previously let his racist flag fly. Only last year, he advocated for a 21st Century version of Operation Wetback. This offensively named operation refers to an Eisenhower-era program that repatriated an estimated 1.4 million illegal immigrants and their American-born children. “President Eisenhower did that,” Turiano stated. “I think America needs another Operation Wetback.”
Montana voters will decide in this upcoming Tuesday’s primary if Drew Turiano is the type of Republican they want representing them to the rest of the country.
