When popular YouTube-r “MagicofRahat” decided to surprise a homeless man with a phony lottery ticket he had no idea what would happen next. He had given a store clerk $1000 to be given to the man, named Eric, and posted a video of the compassionate prank on his channel. The video soon became a viral hit making its way to the front page of YouTube. Viewers asked Rahat if they could do more to help Eric. He created a fundraiser and in just 17 days donors raised $44,000 for the man.

Using the money he raised he was able to pay the rent for a house for Erik to live in. He fully furnished the place and even set some money aside to pay utilities.Ever the prankster, Rahat decided to surprise Eric and pretend that he was stopping by his own home while actually taking the unknowing Eric to see his new house. According to Green Doors, the United States has more homeless women and children than any other industrialized nation. Not since the Great Depression has there been such an epidemic of homelessness in the United States.

Amnesty International has stated that:

Since 2007, banks have foreclosed around eight million homes. It is estimated that another eight to ten million homes will be foreclosed before the financial crisis is over. This approach to resolving one part of the financial crisis means many, many families are living without adequate and secure housing. In addition, approximately 3.5 million people in the U.S. are homeless, many of them veterans. It is worth noting that, at the same time, there are 18.5 million vacant homes in the country.
