‘Government Slimdown,’ Not ‘Shutdown’ Insists Fox News

Screen capture of Fox News' Web site calling the government shutdown a "government slimdown"

Fox News claims there’s no “shutdown,” just a “government slimdown.” Guess all those hungry children going without WIC should just “slim down,” huh? Screen shot of Fox News Web site with government slimdown substituted for shutdown from Newshounds.

According to Fox News, America is not facing a “government shutdown,” just a “government slimdown.”

In various Associated Press reports being used on FoxNews.com, they have replaced the word “shutdown” with “slimdown” in what can only be seen as an attempt to minimize the disaster currently being perpetrated against the American people by a handful of Tea Party Republicans. The blog at MediaMatters.org reports several instances of the Fox News website altering the AP titles and reports. For instance, one AP headline- “Obama Shortens Asia Trip Because Of Shutdown”- was changed to “Obama shortens Asia trip due to government slimdown.”

Let’s be clear — this is no “government slimdown.” It’s a government shutdown despite Fox News’ attempts to make that a talking point.

As of 5:35 PM EST on October 3rd, Fox News’ website was displaying such headlines as “Which Are Essential? Budget stalemate reveals which fed agencies needed” and “5 ways to resolve government slimdown over ObamaCare.” And just to prove that House Republicans are grandstanding working, there’s the headline “House Republicans probe monument closure orders.”

Let’s be clear — this is no slimdown, despite Fox News’ attempts to make that a talking point. A “government slimdown” is when reasonable cuts are made without leaving agencies unable to properly function. A “government slimdown” is orderly and responsible. A “government slimdown” would require maturity and bipartisan support.

To declare this is a “government slimdown” is to minimize the pain the actions of the Republican party have inflicted on thousands of families across the country.

Making the illogical claim that the voters are the ones demanding a shutdown because they don’t want the Affordable Care Act, despite having re-elected the President after its passage, is ridiculous. Ransoming the federal government in order to punish the American people for voting into office a President who promised —  and delivered — affordable health care is not a “government slimdown.” It’s a government shutdown. It’s a fallacy of logic. It’s a bunch of grown men throwing a temper tantrum.

Passing the Pay Our Military Act helps, but being paid isn’t the only concern facing many military families, thanks to the GOP’s “government slimdown”

To declare this is a “slimdown” is to minimize the pain the actions of the Republican party have inflicted on thousands of families across the country. As a military spouse, there were quite a few tense moments leading up to the passage of the Pay Our Military Act, which guaranteed that the troops would be paid. But being paid isn’t the only concern facing many military families. The commissaries on military posts around the country have had their doors shuttered, leaving families without a major benefit. Without being able to shop at the commissary, many families will see their already small paychecks stretched to the brink when faced with the significantly higher prices off-post. Further, many soldiers’ families qualify for and receive additional help from the Women’s, Infants, and Children’s (WIC) program in order to help with basics like formula and milk. Due to the shutdown, these families may be without these benefits. According to Forbes.com, most WIC programs have only enough to keep going for about a week. When we’re talking about the kind of stubbornness being shown by the Tea Partiers in Congress, and seeing as we are already on day 3, it’s not impossible to imagine this situation coming to fruition.

But I guess those hungry pregnant women, infants, and kids should just “slimdown,” huh?
