There are many things the national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” celebrates, two of which are found in the lyrics of the song: America as, 1.) “the land of the free,”  and 2.) “home of the brave.” While the courage of our fellow citizens is exemplified in any number of admirable ways, freedom in all its permutations is a standard of American life that we all, each and every one of us, cherish on a daily basis. Those freedoms include the right to choose or not choose religion, to speak our minds, to vote as we see fit and, every once in a while, to tweak the words of the national anthem to celebrate the gay pride and the newly acquired civil rights of our LGBT citizens. That’d be a freedom recently exercised by the very free (and, some would say, very brave!) Lady Gaga, who sang a slightly amended version of the anthem at a New York gay pride rally this past weekend. As you can imagine, some conservatives – those champions of freedom and small government – are just beside themselves… well, Allen West is.

Allen West Is Mad

Yes, he of countless storied and stupefying statements and equally stunning career stylings, continues to build on that legacy with his sputtering outrage at the Lady for daring to let her freedom ring. He took to his Facebook account (which must just get exhausted by all the hissing and spittle-flying that goes on there) to make a rather self-aggrandizing and certainly condescending statement in denunciation of Gaga:

“Having served in the US Army for 22 years alongside some very brave men and women, I find Lady Gaga’s defiling of our National Anthem reprehensible. We are the land of the free because America has always been the home of the brave from Lexington and Concord to Kandahar. This young lady should be taken to Ft. McHenry and given a history lesson as to why Francis Scott Key wrote those words incredible words. In this week where we remember the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and the 237th anniversary of our Independence is further evidence of the level of ignorance and disrespect some have for our national character. She and all those who cheered her abomination should be ashamed and apologize to every serving and retired member of our Armed Services. But perhaps I ask too much…”

Yes, Mr. West, you do ask too much. It’s absurd and profoundly hypocritical that you, a man who’s made a career of lambasting, in the most disrespectful and ignorant ways, women, fellow politicians, even the President of the United States, should denounce a pop star for showing her support of civil freedoms by changing a few words of a song… words that should insult NO ONE. And let’s not forget some of the original lyrics of that song: “the land of the free.” That goes for Gaga too.

But what, readers may ask, was the “ignorant and disrespectful abomination” Gaga spewed to her audience that raised the ire of the irascible West? From Raw Story:

Lady Gaga sang The Star-Spangled Banner at the New York Gay Pride Parade on Friday, but replaced “star-spangled banner” with “star-spangled flag of pride” and replaced “home of the brave” with “home for the gays.”

Dear God, mother, roll up the streets…. they’re tearing the country to bits!

COME ON! Really?? America is the home of the gays. As it’s the home of citizens of every race, creed, color, political affiliation, conspiracy theory, hate group, religious cult, and so on. And Lady Gaga, whose made the advancement of LGBT rights a major part of her brand as an entertainer, is certainly within her rights to sing that anthem, her anthem as much as any other American’s, in whatever way she sees fit. That Declaration of Independence we celebrate on the 4th of July assures her of that. But one need only look at the comments on West’s Facebook thread to see the tone and tenor of “pro-America” ugliness that’s pontificated by his fans in the name of freedom. Makes you wanna wave a flag and eat cherry pie.

But perhaps the tempest has more to do with Gaga’s notable antipathy for the Republican party. It was revealed in documentation by the Republican nonprofit fundraising organization, American Action Network, in a lawsuit filed against a company hired to set-up the entertainment for the GOP convention in August, that Lady Gaga turned down a $1 million offer to sing at that convention. Well known for her liberal stance on social issues, this was not a surprise to her fans; perhaps, however, it ruffled the feathers of flap-happy fellows in the GOP… like former Florida congressman Allen West, who seems to think he’s the arbiter of true patriotism.

But then again, perhaps suggesting patriotism comes in every shade and color, even rainbow, is asking too much…
