Hey Californians: Why Is This Man Still In Congress? (VIDEO)

Representative Ken Calvert (R-CA) is a shining example of a morally corrupt and hypocritical Republican congressman. Representing California’s 42nd district, and before that the 44th and 43rd districts, he has repeatedly been investigated for ethical violations ranging from using federal funds to increase the worth of his real estate to soliciting a prostitute. The solicitation is coming back to bite him yet again, as a prospective Democratic candidate, Boyd Roberts, has released a video attacking Calvert and asking Colbert to have him on the show to talk about it.

In 2007, Think Progress reported on previous scandals:

Made huge personal profits off his own earmark. Calvert pushed through an earmark to secure over $9 million for freeway and commercial development near property he owned in California. After the development of the area, Calvert sold his property for a 79 percent profit.

Personal firm received commission from earmark. “In another deal, a group of investors bought property a few blocks from the site of a proposed interchange, for $975,000. Within six months, after the earmark for the interchange was appropriated, the parcel of land sold for $1.45 million. Rep. Calvert’s firm received a commission on the sale.”

Rewarded K Street firm under investigation with pork projects. The Copeland Lowery lobbying firm is currently “enmeshed in a federal investigation of Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA).” “Rep. Calvert has helped pass through at least 13 earmarks sought by Copeland Lowery in 2005, adding up to over $91 million.” The lobbying firm has been Calvert’slargest campaign contributor.

Traveled to Saudi Arabia with convicted Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R-CA) in 2004. They were accompanied by Thomas Kontogiannis, an alleged co-conspirator in the Cunningham controversy.

Strangely, Calvert’s solicitation incident wasn’t mentioned in that article, although Think Progress did release an article concerning it two days later. For someone that campaigns as a so-called “family values” Republican, this incident sure seems like it should be out of character.

Calvert was caught with his pants unzipped, in his car, with an admitted prostitute and heroin addict’s head in his lap. Allegedly “just talking to her,” Calvert then attempted repeatedly to run from police. He denied the incident occurred for the following year. The police report states:

I observed a male subject in the driver seat…As I made my way to the driver door, a female immediately sat up straight in the front passenger seat. It appeared as if her head was originally laying in the driver’s lap. … I noticed that the male subject was placing his penis into his unzipped dress slacks, and was trying to hide it with his untucked dress shirt.

As the male subject covered up crotch area with his left hand and shirt, he started his vehicle and placed it into drive and proceeded to leave. I ordered him three times to turn off the vehicle, and he finally stopped and complied…The male identified himself as Kenneth Stanton Calvert.

Democratic candidate Boyd Roberts has made two things very apparent with a video his campaign released on Monday; he really wants to get on Stephen Colbert’s show, and he really doesn’t like Republican Congressman Ken Calvert.

In Boyd Roberts’ video, he jokingly accuses Stephen Colbert of “protecting Congressman Ken Calvert.” The video is recorded from the actual spot “family values” Calvert was caught with a prostitute in 1993.

Some video highlights:
– At 0:41 he shows Calvert’s poor choice of site selection
– At 1:38 Roberts quips-

“Maybe he was just honing his skills as a risk taker, or a job creator?”

– At 1:48 he points out Ken Calvert’s other scandals and corruption.

Boyd Roberts claims that he will come out with other videos calling out Stephen Colbert for an audience on his show while highlighting Calvert’s corruption, scandals, and poor choices as a congressman. They will range from his listing as a most corrupt member of congress on several reports such as business insider and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, to an event in which an English immigrant admitted that he voted illegally, and Calvert’s response was to simply blame Hispanics for voter fraud.

Boyd Robert’s campaign will be very uphill, as the 42nd District is considered a Republican stronghold in California. This race might be worth watching yet, as it seems with a well run campaign, Ken Calvert’s baggage could soon catch up with him. We will be watching to see if Boyd Roberts gets a response from Stephen Colbert, or his requested appearance on The Colbert Report. Roberts’ website (under construction) can be found here and his Facebook page is here.
