The Latest Obama Conspiracy Theory – A THIRD Term!

Yep, that’s the latest among the right wing nut jobs. “Something” will happen – no, honestly, they aren’t specific at all! – and Obama will be so beloved that he will be elected to a third term. Just like the 22nd Amendment says…oh, wait. Darn that Constitution!

The main peddler of this latest whacked-out theory is Stansberry & Associates Investment Research, a publishing firm. They specialize in snake oil financial advice and have a history of promoting such nonsense. Recently they sent out emails signed by George Rayburn, a publisher with their company. In them, they ask readers to imagine that it is 2015 and that “a specific event” – seriously, that’s what it says – will take place. This event will usher in a prosperous period for the U.S. and this is bad because it will “propel Obama to a near-unprecedented third term.” There is a link to a full analysis of this scenario given in the email. They also link to a slideshow called “The Third Term — INSIDE: The Secret Plan to Retain Power Through 2020” The slideshow is little more than a scare piece, laying out how Obama will become a tyrant and implement “terrifying socialist policies.” Oh noes!! Of course, they also point out all the correct (*cough*) predictions that Stansberry & Associates has made over the years. And there is the usual huckstering of their products, of course.

Their actual record on predictions isn’t quite so sunny. In 2010, they predicted violence and unrest along with the destruction of the American economy. That little gem, “End Of America,” completely contradicts this new theory. I guess it’s supposed to just be supplanted by this new bit of wingnuttery. Also suspect: in 2003, the firm was ordered by the SEC to pay $1.5 million in restitution and penalties for selling false financial information.

Several prominent wingnuts have jumped on the “Third Term” bandwagon, including Alex Jones and WorldNetDaily editor, Joseph Farah. It’s hot on the right-wing blogs as well. But they are, of course, pikers when it comes to conspiracy theories when compared to good old Rushbo, who was spouting this bull way back in 2009. Even some on the left have considered the possibility: two left-wing bloggers, Sreedhar Pillai and  Faheem Younus have considered how a third term for Obama might come about.

When he was asked about this third term theory, David Adler, director of the Andrus Center for Public Policy at Boise State University, told Mother Jones:

“There is nothing in his tenure as president, nothing that we know of him, that indicates that Barack Obama is going to seek a third term. Short of a military coup, the 22nd Amendment stands as an insurmountable obstacle to a third-term president today, and there is no evidence to suggest Obama or his supporters are planning on staging a coup. It’s a right-wing fantasy cooked up to try to frighten Americans.”

Even other less-hysterical conservatives have scoffed at the idea. A representative of no less a conservative bulwark that The Heritage Foundation said that it just could not be done. So, no, wingnuts, it could never happen. And I will use small words to help you understand why. When a person runs for President they have to file an application (oh, sorry that was a big word) in every state. If the person has already served two terms – the legal maximum – they can not get on the ballot. It is that simple. Got it? Good.
