New Romney Tape: Mitt Tells CEOs To Pressure Employees To Vote For Him (AUDIO)

Because Mitt Romney obviously can’t win this election fairly, Republicans have turned to all sorts of corrupt tactics to push a “Yes Man” into the White House, including voter suppression, voting fraud, and, now, another case of voter intimidation, right from the “horse’s” mouth.

In a just-released tape, Governor Romney is heard speaking via conference call in June to members of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), an association of private business leaders with starkly conservative leanings. As evidence of the organization’s political affiliation, Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS SuperPAC donated $3.7 million to the NFIB just this year.

You don’t have to read between the lines very much to understand what Romney meant when he said the CEOs should detail how their employees’ jobs and futures may be affected if Romney isn’t elected:

I hope you make it very clear to your employees what you believe is in the best interest of your enterprise and therefore their job and their future in the upcoming elections. And whether you agree with me or you agree with President Obama, or whatever your political view, I hope — I hope you pass those along to your employees. Nothing illegal about you talking to your employees about what you believe is best for the business, because I think that will figure into their election decision, their voting decision.

Listen to the audio clip, first released by In These Times:

The tone of Romney’s remarks resembles the election propaganda the Koch brothers recently sent their employees, and similar threats – that people will lose their jobs if Obama is reelected – that CEOs of companies like ASG Software Solutions and Westgate Resorts have made.

We mustn’t allow these GOP intimidation tactics aimed at middle class workers to have their desired effect. We must reject the rise of fascism and tyranny. We must avoid reliving the widespread economic instability that was caused by GOP-endorsed deregulation, progressive tax cuts for the rich, and widening income inequality.

The really sad part about all this is the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling made this type of voter intimidation legal. Before 2010, it was illegal for employers to try to tell employees how to vote. But, now that Corporations are People, things are disturbingly different. According to Paul Secunda of the Yale Law Journal, we now have no laws that prevent corporations from threatening to fire employees unless they attend partisan political rallies and/or participate in one-sided conversations with their supervisors about political issues. In addition, Secunda writes that “there is no requirement that opposing candidates be offered equal time, or even that employees themselves be permitted to ask questions or voice their own opinions.”

An essential tenant of our democracy is everyone is free to pursue their happiness. Being bullied into voting for your employer’s American dream under penalty of termination is fascist on its face.
