Follow Up – Anti-Gay Woman Who Spoke Before The Lincoln City Council Is Schizophrenic

Back in May, I wrote a piece about a seriously impaired woman giving a speech before the Lincoln City Nebraska City Council. The 52 year old woman, Jane Svoboda, made clearly insane comments before the Council:

“Have no gays in education. A huge percent of gay men in school grounds molest boys, partly because they don’t have AIDS yet.”

“Lesbians and gays rarely live past 40 years old because it is common for a partner to do away with them or they self-inflict.”

“Gays are the bioethics geneciders in hospitals.”

“College women are seduced with Rohypnol to go gay; otherwise they think it’s abhorent.”

In the article, I mentioned the possibility that she was seriously deranged. As it turns out, the Journal has reported that she is certifiably schizophrenic and lives in an assisted living facility in Lincoln. Her brother and conservator, Patrick Svoboda, was unaware that the video of his sister had gone viral and is upset that people found it amusing.

I didn’t find it funny and said so. I found it to be tragic because there are people in this country who share the demented views of this woman without the excuse of being certifiably mentally ill.  I will admit that at the time I wrote the article, I didn’t know, but merely suspected that Ms. Svoboda wasn’t competent. And I will admit to being a tad snarky – but just a tad. The point I wanted to make was that the absolutely crazy views expressed by Ms. Svoboda are not too far from the garbage one hears issuing from the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck.

We’ve even heard politicians on the subject.

Rick Santorum stated that he had a problem with homosexuality and said that the sex lives of homosexuals should be regulated in the same way as child molesters and polygamists. He even linked being homosexual to bestiality when he said, “In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever, to my knowledge, included homosexuality. That’s not to pick on homosexuality. It’s not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be.”

As reported in Addicting Info on May 19, GOP Mississippi State Representative Andy Gipson called for putting gays to death on his Facebook page. The ensuing uproar over his remarks caused Mr. Gibson to make an official statement distancing himself from his hateful remarks.

People in the media, people in politics. These are the people who influence others. These are the people with whom we’ve entrusted the public good. And yet, these same people spew insane rhetoric that mirrors the ramblings of a woman who who is seriously mentally impaired. It is a national disgrace. And it seems to be what the Republican Party is all about these days.

To Ms. Svoboda’s family, I offer an apology for my part in helping to make that video go viral. I make no apologies to the right wing hacks who have made it their life’s mission to denigrate other human beings for merely being who they were born to be. I suspect those same media figures and politicians would take away Ms. Svoboda’s health care options in a New York second if they thought they could get away with it.
