The Santorum Girls, Haley and Camille, Sing One For Rick (VIDEO)

Sooner or later, it had to happen and it did. We now have the “Santorum Girls”, two fresh-faced and talented young women from Oklahoma. They and their family were apparently so excited about Rick Santorum visiting their town on the campaign trail that they felt compelled to not only write a song, but make a video letting the world know that change is on the way.

It’s a catchy tune and everyone in it is up and happy and waving those Santorum signs, letting the rest of us know that Rick will stand for what is right, God gave us a Bill of Rights, there will be justice for the unborn, factories back on our shores and the Constitution will rule our land. Not only that, we’ll have a president who is “loyal to our land” and taxes will be lower!

Here is the video:

It all sounds so grand, so American. But I thought we were already living in a country that is guided (I don’t like the word ruled – that smacks of monarchs and all those things we fought to get rid of back in the day) by our Constitution. As I recall, the first Amendment to our Constitution contains a prohibition of laws respecting an establishment of religion. The stance Santorum has taken with his uber-Catholicism seems to be counter to that prohibition. I have no problem with someone being Catholic. I used to be a Catholic myself. I do have a problem with someone, particularly a someone who wants to be president of this country, trying to shove his beliefs down my throat and the throats of everyone else. Those fresh-faced young women may still be virgins and as such, not concerned about things like birth control at this point in their lives. But what about circumstances having nothing to do with having that dreaded and only to be engaged in for purposes of procreation act? What about something like endometriosis, a painful condition alleviated by the birth control pills Rick wants to outlaw? According to him, taking the Pill “is a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.” So I guess if one has a medical condition that could be helped by the Pill, well, that’s just too bad. His morality trumps your medical condition.

There may be “justice for the unborn” but for those already here? Not so much. Rick doesn’t like abortion. Really, who does? But sometimes it’s a necessary thing to have to do. Rick wants to turn back to clock and outlaw all abortions, even in the case of rape or incest. He wants to make a unilateral decision for every woman in the country, no discussion. Because he is confident in his righteous knowledge that he is right and anyone who disagrees with him is wrong. When one talks about justice for the unborn, let’s talk about justice for the just born who someone with no way out delivered and then threw into a dumpster. Or doesn’t that count?

As far as those factories on our shores, we’d all be glad to see that happen but Rick isn’t real clear on what he’ll do to accomplish this promise. If he thinks lowering taxes even more will work, perhaps he would be served well by taking a quick course on economics. We saw during the Reagan administration (lauded as the ultimate in the song) that trickle down economics doesn’t work. The Republicans didn’t get the memo so they tried it again during the reign of George W. Bush and we all know how that turned out. Lower taxes for the wealthy sucked the dollars out of our economy, didn’t create so much as one job and in fact, drove jobs oversees so the wealthy could make even MORE money. The effect of that was to put more people out of work so they had little or no disposable income, which, in turn, drove demand down, which led to more layoffs, fewer jobs, less money circulating and oops! The country went off a cliff. We’ve been struggling to scale that cliff for the past three years and it has been slow and painful but we’re actually making progress. Rick would bring change all right. He’d shove us right back over the cliff.

They didn’t sing about it, but I thought they should have included a verse about how Rick would get rid of public schools. Because hey, everyone should be as misinformed as the people in this musical family!

Finally, there’s that line about having a president who is “loyal to our land”. To me, that smacks of intimating the president we now have isn’t loyal to our country. There are people out there, maybe even these fresh-faced Oklahoma girls, who actually believe our president isn’t a true American. They think he’s a Muslim intent on destroying this country and delivering us into the hands of terrorists. Forget that since Barack Obama has taken office, he’s managed to dispose of the top Al Quaida leaders, including the perpetrator of 9/11 and biggest fish of all, Osama bin Laden. Forget that he has repaired the reputation of this country around the world after the black eye given to us by the torture president. They disregard these inconvenient truths in favor of a narrow ideology fed to them by a guy in a sweater vest who delights in talking about how his campaign is a loosely knit, fly by the seat of your pants affair and how that is somehow a good thing.

They sing that change is at hand. I sincerely hope not.
