The unemployment rate is over 9% and millions of Americans are suffering because of mass layoffs, but Republicans are feeling nothing but joy. During GOP Governor Chris Christie’s speech at the Reagan Library, conservatives cheered upon the mention of Ronald Reagan firing thousands of air traffic controllers.

CHRISTIE: In August 1981, the air traffic controllers, in violation of their contracts, went on strike. President Reagan ordered them back to work, making clear that those who refused would be fired. In the end, thousands refused, and thousands were fired. [applause]

Here’s the video:

Republicans have forced over 500,000 layoffs of government workers across the country because of their obsession with gutting government spending. The problem with this is that by causing job losses, Republicans are only adding to the nation’s economic woes. They are taking even more consumers out of the economy. People who work for the government are part of the economy too, despite what Republicans say.

Government workers are our neighbors just as much as the private sector workers. They are part of the community and when you take away their jobs, you make the community economically weaker. But it’s worse than that. Government workers serve a big purpose in our society. They inspect our food and our water, approve government loans to businesses, approve driver’s licenses and other permits, they inspect buildings and homes to make sure they are safe, they make sure airplanes can fly safely, and much more. Without government workers, we are less safe and businesses do not get what they need to operate. And less government workers means more unemployed people who won’t have the money to put into the economy. That means less profits for area businesses which means less hiring.

It is clear that Republicans care more about destroying jobs than they do about creating them. In fact, destroying jobs is what they cheer for.
