Senators McCain, Lieberman, and Graham Promised To Help Arm Gadhafi Two Years Ago

It turns out that Republican Senators enjoy “palling around with terrorists”. According to Wikileaks, Senators John McCain, Joe Lieberman, and Lindsey Graham visited Libya two years ago and promised to help arm Gadhafi and his regime. Never mind the fact that Gadhafi sponsors terrorism.

According to a leaked August 2009 U.S. diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks recounting the Senators’ meeting, neoconservative Connecticut Senator Lieberman captured the dynamic of aligning with a brutal dictator:

“Lieberman called Libya an important ally in the war on terrorism, noting that common enemies sometimes make better friends. “We never would have guessed ten years ago that we would be sitting in Tripoli, being welcomed by a son of Muammar al-Qadhafi,” remarked Senator Lieberman. He stated that the situation demonstrated that change is possible and expressed appreciation that Libya had kept its promises to give up its WMD program and renounce terrorism.”

But the Senators weren’t there just toi have a friendly chat.

“Senator McCain assured Muatassim that the United States wanted to provide Libya with the equipment it needs for its security. He stated that he understood Libya’s requests regarding the rehabilitation of its eight C130s and pledged to see what he could do to move things forward in Congress. He encouraged Muatassim to keep in mind the long-term perspective of bilateral security engagement and to remember that small obstacles will emerge from time to time that can be overcome. He described the bilateral military relationship as strong and pointed to Libyan officer training at U.S. Command, Staff, and War colleges as some of the best programs for Libyan military participation.”

This is a very revealing finding considering how much criticism these three have aimed at President Obama since the United States began aiding the rebels in Libya through limited air strikes. These three Senators wanted President Obama to bomb Libya, put troops on the ground and go into an all out war against a dictator they had offered to provide American weapons and equipment to only a few years earlier. So basically, had this deal been struck, the Senators would have been fine with sending our troops against a mad man who would have had American equipment and weapons to use against our troops. Isn’t that treason?
