On May 22, 2011, an F5 tornado devastated the city of Joplin, Missouri; killing 159 people. The twister destroyed a large portion of the city, including the high school. Thanks to the efforts of city officials, school teachers, administrators, and parents, school began right on time yesterday.

But that’s not the entire story. Earlier in the month, the United Arab Emirates embassy provided $500,000 to the school to purchase new Apple laptops for each and every high school student and has intentions to match an additional $500,000 in donations from others; which would make the total possible donation $1 million. The laptops will undoubtedly aid in learning and gives students something to look forward to as the school year begins.

This is an extraordinary act of kindness from a people who have faced hatred in this country since 9/11. Even as Republicans in Congress hold ridiculous hearings to investigate the Arab community in America, an Arab country 8,000 miles away shows an act of kindness to a mostly Christian Midwestern community. It makes one wonder how anyone could hate an entire people because of one extremist act committed by a few, when it is clear that the majority of Arabs are great human beings.
