How to fight the lie that Obama doesn’t deserve credit for bin Laden’s death.

I’m absolutely dismayed that many people hate our president so much that they feel it necessary to copy-and-paste a Facebook post which lies about Obama debating whether to pay the troops while trying to diminish the role our Commander in Chief played in the death of Osama bin Laden.  Many are also trying their best to give Bush all the credit due to partisan politics rather than the facts. You’d think that this would be one issue that all Americans could come together and unite over – but no. Instead we get this garbage from right-wingers who can’t stand to give Obama credit for anything whatsoever:

Let’s be clear on this: OBAMA did NOT kill Bin Laden. An American Soldier, who Obama just a few weeks ago was debating on whether or not to PAY, did. Obama just happened to be the one in office when our Soldiers finally found Osama Bin Laden and took him out. This is NOT an Obama victory, but an… AMERICAN victory!! REPOST IF YOU AGREE.

This is dishonest and just plain stupid. Politicizing the death of bin Laden is not helpful but they have chosen to do so therefore it deserves a reasoned response so here are the facts:

No, Barack Obama didn’t kill bin Laden personally but he did give the go-ahead to the mission that killed him. Osama bin Laden didn’t kill anyone on 9/11 but he did order the mission and he gets blamed for it doesn’t he? Our president is the Commander in Chief and in this case he had a very difficult call to make which he got absolutely right. He could have refused to act in Pakistan or let their military handle it which would have been a very bad idea seeing that they are completely untrustworthy. Obama could have chosen to have the location bombed into oblivion but the death of bin Laden would be in doubt and we would have lost a wealth of intelligence on al Qaeda. The mission was incredibly risky and, even after a near disaster due to losing a helicopter, the Navy SEALS were able to pull it off remarkably well. A failed mission would not only jeopardize diplomatic relations with Pakistan and future operations against terrorists in the region but it would have also made every single right-winger who now refuse to give Obama credit blame him for the blunder. Obama took a huge risk by authorizing the mission so he undoubtedly deserves credit.

Obama did not debate whether to pay the troops. That is a lie. The debate was over the government shutting down and Republicans not only stopped any Democratic effort to ensure the troops would be paid in case of a shutdown but they also used ideological issues that had nothing to do with the budget to hold the government hostage. The amount of budget cuts were already agreed to but they had to try to force through the defunding of Planned Parenthood and other irrelevant riders which caused the possibility of a shutdown to go down to the last minute. If the government had shut down it clearly would have been the Republicans fault that troops didn’t get paid.  President Obama negotiated the deal that kept the government running which meant no troops would lose their pay yet he gets attacked with blatant lies about the issue in delusional wingnut world.

Obama didn’t just happen to be the one in office when our soldiers finally found Osama Bin Laden and took him out. He is the democratically elected President and Commander in Chief of the U.S. military. And it wasn’t by accident. Obama has always promised to refocus our military efforts on the real front of the ‘war on terror’ in Afghanistan and Pakistan and he followed through. He has always promised that if he learns of bin Laden’s location in Pakistan he wouldn’t hesitate to take him out – and that’s exactly what he did. In sharp contrast John McCain clearly stated that he would not go into Pakistan to get bin Laden. If you believe McCain and he ‘just happened’ to be in office then bin Laden may still be alive today plotting attacks against our country. The American people had a clear choice for the counter-terrorism policies of our country and we now know that we made the right decision in 2008.

Obviously yes, an American soldier killed bin Laden. They executed their mission amazingly well and deserve the bulk of the credit for their brave actions. The Navy SEALs who did this are the best-of-the-best our military has to offer and I have not seen a single liberal claim Obama should get credit without also mentioning our military. The wingnuts are simply misrepresenting appropriate praise for our president because they can’t stand for him to get any credit in this matter.

Since I don’t believe that this should be a partisan political issue, I also think George W. Bush deserves some credit for the intelligence that was gathered under his watch which led to the death of Osama bin Laden. However, I cannot ignore the simple fact that Bush never got him and Obama did. Bush took focus off Afghanistan and Pakistan for Iraq which had nothing to do with the ‘war on terror.’ Bush even went as far as to say that he was “truly not concerned” with bin Laden. Today we know the truth – that it IS important to decapitate the head of al Qaeda and it is a huge symbolic victory that all Americans are celebrating. The credit Bush deserves is miniscule. His torture policy did not contribute to the intelligence which led to the death of bin Laden. In fact, the vast majority of the intelligence that led to bin Laden was gathered without these ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ under the Obama administration.

You’d think from this ridiculous FB post that liberals are only giving Obama credit and that we think this is just an “Obama victory.” That is false. Every liberal I’ve seen post on the subject also thinks it is an American victory and always thanks the troops for their important role in the death of bin Laden.

We should all be happy to have a president who had the guts to give the go-ahead for this mission and be gratified that our intelligence agencies found the most wanted person in the world and proud of our military who bravely took OBL out. Yes, this is an American victory so why are so many acting so un-American by attacking the President of the United States? To attempt to make this political and refuse to give Obama any credit whatsoever while also lying about his support for the troops is not only unreasonable – it’s also unpatriotic. Those who are posting this insulting FB post are just proving that many care more about partisan politics than patriotism. I find that reprehensible and, frankly, that kind of partisan irrationality is what’s wrong with America. Stop being part of the problem.
