Why do many people think ‘birthers’ are motivated by racism?

For the first time since I began writing, I’m finally writing about the birthers. I’ve largely avoided them because of just how completely nutty and racist their cause is. Their blatant conspiracy theory that President Obama is a secret muslim who was born in Kenya has been nothing more than a racist attempt to defraud him and invalidate his Presidency.

On Wednesday, President Obama released his long form birth certificate, which should end this stupid quest of the birthers once and for all. But they are already thinking of more crackpot ideas and excuses to keep their claims alive. Birthers are now saying that because President Obama “took too long” to release his long form birth certificate, that it can’t possibly be authentic. Another new claim has to do with supposed “layers” on the web copy. What a load of Republican crap.

It is clear that President Obama was NOT born in Kenya. The fact is, President Obama was born in 1961 in Hawaii, which is a US state. Birth notices for Barack Obama were published in the Honolulu Advertiser on August 13 and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin on August 14, 1961. It’s silly to even believe that Obama was born in Kenya and these crazy people only subscribe to this theory because of the President’s skin color. They believe that since he is black, he had to have been born in Africa.

Another theory they have is that President Obama is not a naturalized citizen because his father is not a US citizen. This is yet another lame, desperate attempt to paint the President as not being one of us. The 14th Amendment of the Constitution states that “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States….” Obama was born in Hawaii to an American mother, therefore, he IS a naturalized US citizen subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. By the logic of the birthers, Chester A. Arthur, the 21st President of the United States, would also not have been qualified for the office. His father, a Protestant preacher from Ireland, was a British subject and did not become a U.S. citizen until many years after the future President’s birth. This would apply to John McCain as well because he was born in the Panama Canal Zone which is NOT United States territory. Most of our earliest Presidents would not qualify either because they were born citizens of England. Martin Van Buren was the first President not born a British subject.

Birthers are even claiming that Hawaii isn’t really a state. Are they really THAT desperate? Let’s put that one to rest. Hawaii became the nation’s 50th state on August 21, 1959, so it has been a US state for over fifty years now. I really wish these conservative folks would learn how to read and pick up some civics books every once and a while. It would grow their tiny brains.

As the President said yesterday, we have bigger issues that need to be covered and dealt with. This birther movement has taken over the airwaves and needs to come to an end. It has contributed to making the Republican Party a laughingstock and is driving people away from the party in droves. Of course, as a liberal, that makes me smile because I know independents and sane conservatives may be more likely to vote against Republicans in 2012 because of this birther fiasco.

But the President’s move is also a brilliant piece of political genius. Like a chess player making a very calculated move to put his opponent in an awkward position, President Obama’s move to release his long form birth certificate is putting the mainstream Republican politicians in an uncomfortable spot. Over 50% of Republicans have some kind of doubt about the President’s birth, but with the release of this document, that number is likely to drop. But Republican politicians still have a base to pander to and you can bet that base will look even crazier now as they scramble to demand other documents to prove Obama’s legitimacy. They will demand to see his grade school report cards, his college scores, his Social Security card, his diary, and his dental records. Mainstream Republican politicians can either admit that President Obama is a legitimate American and thus suffer the wrath of the Tea Party, or they can continue towing the line of Tea Party birtherism and suffer the wrath of nearly everybody else. The next year and a half will likely be an extremely hilarious comedy show that ends with Republicans going out with a thud, and with the great drama of Democrats taking over Congress by a landslide and President Obama becoming a two term President. Get your popcorn ready.
