Tax Day is the New Fourth of July

Tax evasion? Go directly to jail unless you’re rich.

It’s Tax Day! There are two kinds of people on tax day. One kind celebrates the government that is supported by their financial sacrifice and the other that laments any sacrifice at all. The first loves their country, the second is an ingrate. Other than volunteering to go off to foreign countries and get shot at, what could possibly be more patriotic than supporting your country by making sure it can afford to do the work we created it to do?  Tax Day is the day we chip in, together, to make our country a better place to live.

It’s that day of the year when people who give a damn about the well-being of their fellow humans support the programs that keep the poor and sick alive by gladly pay their fair share.

It’s that day of the year when people who have a basic understanding of what the government does for them on a daily basis to improve their lives happily pay their fair share.

It’s that day of the year when people who like clean air, water and food recognize that, without money, the government could not provide these things and gleefully pay their fair share.

It’s that day of the year when people who want to drive on smooth roads and safe bridges remember that these things cost the government money and thankfully pay their fair share.

It’s also that day of the year when people who  hate the idea of government complain about how much they have to pay.

It’s also that day of the year when people who think that war is good but welfare is evil bitch about how much they have to pay.

It’s also that day of the year when people who think corporations will do the right thing on their own whine about how much they have to pay.

It’s also that day of the year when people who complain about the price of gas but hate green technology because it sounds “gay” resent how much they have to pay.

It’s also that day of the year when people who are too stupid to know they are paying the lowest amount of taxes in a generation scream about how much they have to pay.

Sadly, it’s never that day of the year for the rich who hide their money through accounting tricks so they effectively pay less than you.

Sadly, it’s never that day of the year for the corporations with “headquarters” located in various Caribbean countries so they effectively pay less then you. Some pay nothing and others even get billions in refunds.

Sadly, it’s never that day of the year for the GOP who, in a bid to protect the rich and corporations, have blocked any further funding for the IRS to pursue tax cheats so those cheats can continue to pay less than you.

Sadly, it’s never that day of the year for the people who are so poor they can’tcontribute to the country that tries to help them and so they pay less than you. If you think they’re “Lucky duckies” you’re a fraking idiot.

So as you pay your taxes, or if you’ve  already paid them, think about what kind of person you are. Do you appreciate what you have, a government that does for you what you cannot do for yourself or do you resent the money that you have to pay to keep that government running?

Are you a patriot? Or are you an ingrate?
