To: GOP – Should I claim rape?

The GOP has made it quite clear that jobs are not the most important in their agenda. Now, I am fully aware that government cannot create private sector jobs, but they can help them get started by creating a stable economy and making businesses feel secure. I tend to agree with the GOP’s assessment of cutting taxes for small businesses, but as soon as an LLC or Co. tag is associated with that business, it needs to be taxed.

In any case, the GOP has decided not to figure out how to make the economy stable by getting the GDP up, which creates more products coming into the country than going out. Oh no, they have focused on women and education. Normally, when government focuses on such things, it is to help, but not when the GOP are involved. We are seeing an assault on women and education across the nation, not just on the national/federal level, but on local levels as well. While the educational system does need fixed, cutting funding for programs and schools is not going to do any good. The only thing that does is make it tougher for the US to compete in the global market.

While education concerns me a great deal, women’s rights are at the top of my list. Why? Because there are a lot of people to fight for education, even on the ‘right’ side of the aisle, but women? Our numbers of fighters are slipping. Yes, do not be shocked by this, let me explain. Women have been fighting for rights for hundreds of years and we are still fighting. While we had the bra burning to show we can be anything we want to be and we have become CEO’s to show we are just as smart (eh hem possibly smarter) than our male counter-parts, we are now being drug back to the 1920’s by our hair kicking and screaming.

I for one am tired of fighting for my rights not just as a woman, but as a human being. We matter damn it! Unfortunately, we just do not matter enough when it comes to the GOP and their agendas. We are just a costly “speed bump” to their ultimate plans. The GOP are trying to defund Planned Parenthood, which helps educate and medically take care of women (and even men too!). Why? Just because of the GOP’s religious belief about abortion. Well, let me tell you something GOP, it is MY CHOICE! Not yours! MINE! You choose to believe in a particular religion and no one is taking that away from you, so do not proceed to take my choice away from me.

There is a representative in GA, Rep. Bobby Franklin, has introduced a bill that would criminalize miscarriages under certain circumstances, making abortion and miscarriage covered under the “prenatal murder” statute. According to the bill, courts could assess sentences similar to murder convictions. For a MISCARRIAGE?!?! What year is this? Have the GOP invented a time machine and taken us back to the 19th century? *Newsflash* – a miscarriage is a natural, devastating happening.

The GOP also want to redefine rape and really all this does is desensitize people to rape. Instead of a person who has been raped being called a ‘victim’, they will be called ‘the accuser’. While I do not like anyone calling themselves a ‘victim’ because it makes you feel defeated, why couldn’t they have called them “survivors”? Did you know there were over 95,000 reported cases of rape in the US as of 2010? That number is astonishing and disgusting.

The current definition of rape is “the unlawful compelling of a woman through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse; or any act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation; to seize or to take by force”. Under these definitions, maybe I should call rape on the GOP for forcefully taking my rights away as a woman and as a citizen. Actually, under the ‘new’, GOP definition “rape is only truly when it is forced”, I could truly call rape of my rights on the GOP.
